If its name sounds familiar, it is what you think it is. Age of Empires: Castle Siege was created by the same developers of the Age of Empires games you might have played back then. Microsoft certainly outdid themselves in this game, given that it’s safe to say they created a mobile gaming real-time strategy masterpiece.

Age of Empires: Castle Siege, employs a point-and-click control scheme which is incredibly intuitive. If you’ve played other RTS games on your phone or tablet, you will be able to easily understand how this game works. Furthermore, the user interface is nothing short of intuitive: allowing you a fun and seamless experience.

The game is extremely complicated - nearly all RTS games are. However, the developers did an excellent job in the tutorial stages which will be the first hurdles you need to go through before diving into the action. Richard the Lionheart will be the character orienting you throughout the whole process. It lets you learn all of the basic facets of the game, from how to build structures, to upgrading them. Apart from these, you will also try your hand in fighting a battle: you will take command of Richard the Lionheart’s forces in a siege.

The biggest draw of the game, the battles, are well-executed. All of you have to do is select the units displayed on the bottom of the screen by tapping them. After this, simply tap on the areas on where you want to place them on the battlefield. From there, you can then command them to attack your opponent’s units and structures.

There are several types of units: siege, ranged, and melee. Siege units are more effective in destroying structures, while melee units are better equipped to fight their counterparts. Ranged units meanwhile, are best used as support units. Your best bet would be to take down your opponent’s defense towers first and breach the walls to allow your foot soldiers to enter and take down his defense units.

Defending your castle is also equally fun. Your castle will sometimes be under attack from marauders, and it’s up to you to build defenses and order your units to not let them put your land to ruin. The battles are seamless and fun: the graphics and the way everything is presented is top notch. There are no noticeable frame rate drops, and it’s pretty fun to watch your army dismantle your opponent’s holdings to burning heaps of rubble.

While the battles are fun, the building and upgrading parts are well-done too. Turn your land into an impenetrable fortress, and at the same time, an economic power. Take note that you can choose which civilization you want to be part of. You can be part of the Britons, Saracens, the Kievan Rus, and more. Your units, strengths, and weaknesses will be dependent on what your civilization is. Moreover, this also applies in picking heroes. For example, Saracens will have Saladin, while the French has Joan of Arc.

Unfortunately, since it’s a real-time strategy game, you need to wait for a certain amount of time whenever you’re off and building structures. Moreover, it’s a freemium game, so you may need to spend real money to progress quickly.

If you’re a fan of RTS games, then Age of Empires: Castle Siege should be one of the games on your bucket list. It can provide hundreds of hours of gameplay, and will certainly keep you endlessly preoccupied. That being said, if you’ve played the old games on PC, this is one game you have to try out.
