Despite its simple façade, Trove is actually a very powerful MMORPG that could hold its own against its competitors. The game’s graphics are made of very large pixels, which is the norm for voxel games that have become quite popular even when most games today are decked out in breathtaking and detailed images. That’s where its appeal takes hold – the simple and light graphics make the game run very smooth and does not take much in terms of computer resources.
As for plotline, the game’s story revolves around a warrior that was challenged by the threat of darkness that has been creeping back into the world a long time after the Sun Goddess vanquished them in a dazzling display of power and light. The darkness is growing again in numbers and strength, and it is up to you, the warrior, to take on the weight of the world on your shoulders and save it from the darkness.
The title plays out like any RPG. However, there are no lengthy tutorials here. At the start, you are given your first mission – destroy the monster that has been lurking in a cave just near to where you begin the game. You find out right away that, just like most MMORPGs, you can move your character using the keys A,W,S and D, while moving the camera around using the mouse. You attack with your left mouse button, while you use the right mouse button for a special attack.
After a few minutes, where the game tells you how to teleport from a dungeon and into the open world, you are told to head over to the Novice world where you build your abode by claiming a cornerstone. This seems to be a common practice among voxel games, and definitely in play here in Trove.
There are two modes while you are in the open world. First, you have the build mode where you can rearrange blocks around your abode to personalize it. You do this by destroying blocks with the right mouse button, and then placing blocks using the left mouse while in build mode.
Second, you have the combat mode, which you should be when you’re facing monsters. Combat mode allows you to gain experience and even loot items from your quarries. You can use special attacks here just like any MMORPG as well as items like your Elixir, which restores your health. The Elixir is also infinite in quantity as you can simply return to your cornerstone and refill it. When you pick up new items, make sure to visit your inventory and equip any new battle gear you might have picked up.
The amazing thing about playing this game is that, while you’re in open mode, you can freely switch between these two modes by pressing the Tab button.
Gain experience by fighting monsters or clearing dungeons that are numerous in the open world. This is where the fun lies in Trove. Despite its simple graphics and the lack of a soundtrack, this game could become addicting because of its smooth-loading nature and its user-friendliness. It’s free to play, and you just need to download the installer from its website.
