With many exciting features to offer, including some pretty unique ones like the game’s “Downed” system and the brilliantly designed and animated action-based combat and movements, it is no wonder Blade & Soul is among many game websites’ most anticipated free-to-play MMORPGs of 2016 list, including ours. Why is this so? Well, let’s find out!
Right of the bat, Blade & Soul provides each new player with up to 4 races, 8 classes and a myriad of customization options. It’s simply crazy how many parts of your character you can modify to your liking in this game, but if you simply want to quickly see some action, there are pre-made characters that you can choose from as well. Once you’re done, you can start playing the game.
Stirring to life after being rescued from the ocean, Blade & Soul begins your gaming experience with a flashback detailing the game’s epic story of war and betrayal – a story where your brothers and sisters in the same martial arts school was brutally murdered by the evil villain, Jin Seoyeon, and her minions. Couple that with some interactive tutorial, where you’ll be introduced to the many movement and controls of the game, including how to windwalk - the main way to travel in this game, and how to run up vertical walls, and you’ll have been completely engrossed into the picturesque world of Blade & Soul.
The combat system in this game is simply astonishing as well. The fluidity in which your character moves may just have made the action-and-combo-based combat system in this game the new “golden standard” for all future martial arts MMORPGs. You can mix and match so many of your skills to gain amazing combo effects which will in turn unlock certain combo-based actions and skills. Not to mention, the game also features a unique “downed” system whereby you are given a chance to recover from being “downed” (or supposedly defeated), provided that you can take down your opponent/s within the short duration given.
In this game, players are only allowed to equip weapons and clothes (no armor) in order to keep to the realism of martial arts combat. After all, it’s simply impossible to execute all those cool KungFu moves while you’re stumbling around in heavy armor. However, the game supplements the lack of equipments with a Soul Shield system. A Soul Shield is made up of 9 shield fragments and if you’ve collected certain number of pieces, you’ll gain certain “set” bonuses. There are also many different types of soul shield, each granting different set of stats. Pick a shield with stats that suit your class and you’re good to go!
Blade & Soul also doesn’t have a healer class and this definitely makes boss fights in PvE dungeons a very intense affair. Every seconds count and working with your team is paramount in this game. Dungeons are usually made up of 4 to 6 people and it’s interesting to note that you can attempt a dungeon with less than the recommend number of people in hopes of getting more lucrative rewards. The dungeons are pretty standard fare though and, to be fair, most MMORPGs tend to be that way. This is perhaps something that the game can work on via future patches.
In terms of PvP, you can enjoy open world PvP, depending on the faction you choose to side with as well as whether you had your faction clothes on or not, as well as 1-on-1 and 3-vs-3 arena PvP. Open world PvP in Blade & Soul is also fair to the players in the sense that only player kills whereby the players in question are within your level range will be awarded with PvP points.
Let’s not forget about the wide range of crafting and gathering professions that you can pick up in Blade & Soul. You can only choose 4 out of the 14 total professions provided (2 gathering and 2 crafting professions) though. You’ll need to choose wisely depending on what your class needs.
Last but not least, the in-game world is simply breathtaking. Every part of the game is so beautifully designed that it is almost impossible not to just lose yourself in the virtual world of Blade & Soul. The sounds in this game are pretty amazing as well, particularly the ambient sounds and sound effects of various actions in the game.
Touted as one of the most anticipated MMORPGs of 2016, Blade & Soul is definitely as impressive as the hype it has managed to rile up prior to its release back in January. Slathered with an immersive storyline and amazingly in-depth character customizations, the game features some really epic martial arts action-based combat and movements as well as plenty of fun PvE and PvP dungeons and arenas to enjoy. There are a slew of professions you can pick up as well. If you’re a true MMO gamer, Blade & Soul is definitely a game you wouldn’t want to miss! Play it today!
