Mabinogi by Nexon is a rather weird MMORPG that has a really cool anime themed graphic style but that isn’t the weird thing about it. The game incorporates features like growing older, making music and a bunch of other unique features into the gameplay that haven’t ever been seen before in an MMORPG but it also does a great job of executing the traditional concepts so it’s great in that department as well and both these things considered, it’s a game that should definitely be tried out.
Starting off in the world of Mabinogi you’ll first be asked to create a character. The basic character customization options are all here which is great but there’s another thing which is the ability to pick your starting age. Your starting age will basically determine how your stats scale up and how many stats you start out with so it’s wise to do some research and choose an age that would suit your play-style the best.
Once you’re done with creation you’ll be taken straight into the game and placed in the beginner area where you’ll get your first quest and first pieces of equipment. The initial few quests are pretty basic and are there mostly to teach you about the basics of the game rather than challenge your skills. The tutorial quests are pretty helpful and quite rewarding and at the end of them all you’ll have earned a fair bit of levels, currency and equipment.
The plot of the game unveils at a rather slow pace in the form of different chapters but the basic concept of it is that you’re brought into a world that lives in harmony despite some minor conflicts here and there but you’re receiving dreams telling you that another world, namely ‘Tir Na Nog’ is in danger and you must come to save it.
The gameplay of Mabinogi is a blend of its unique elements with traditional MMORPG elements. You have your standard skill based combat where you utilize hotkeys to use spells when fighting. The traditional skill progression is there where as you level up you’ll receive skill points that you can put into any ability/skill that you’d like to boost its power a bit. The main talking points of Mabiongi’s gameplay are the unique things that it has added into the formula. There are tons of activities such as the ability to get a part time job, compose your own music and a whole lot more. You’ll be pretty busy in the game even if you decide to not do quests and that’s a great thing. The game overall feels a lot more social since there are so many activities that you can perform with other players so you’ll be making a lot of friends as you progress through the game.
In terms of graphics, although the graphical style of Mabinogi might not appeal to everyone out there, it doesn’t change the fact that the game looks really good. There are great environments with a ton of detail; all the animations are incredibly fluid and just overall the game looks pretty solid so if you can look past the anime-esque art style, there’s a lot to see in this game.
There’s a cash shop in the game where you can buy a ton of equipment such as pets to accompany you, gift boxes containing random rare items and various other objects that’ll aid you in the game quite a fair bit.
Mabinogi is definitely one of the most unique MMORPGs out there thanks to all the distinct features that are present in the game. A must try for anyone whether or not they’re a fan of the genre.
