MapleStory Blitz is a spinoff of MapleStory, a popular MMORPG which you may have played before. Despite not being a new IP though, MapleStory Blitz is a fantastic strategy card game, introducing unique elements that would make you play it for hours without end. The battles are fast-paced and exciting, giving it an impression that it’s not a card game. With that said, is it something you would want to learn and invest some time in? Let’s find out.

Like any other card-collecting MMO, MapleStory Blitz starts with a rather comprehensive tutorial headed by a bespectacled (and pompous) character. The title incorporates various gameplay elements which may look daunting to learn. However, once you get the basics, you will be on the road to mastering it. The tutorials may last about 30 minutes to an hour, but are worth going through if you want to get far into the game. Your goal is to destroy the enemy tower opposite yours, which is divided by three lanes.

In a nutshell, each deck has 30 cards and there are two types: skill and monster cards. To use them, you need to have enough mana, which is being recharged constantly during battle. They have various effects, ranging from area of effect damage to healing your own monsters. Meanwhile, monster cards can be summon into any of the three lanes where they can go head-to-head against enemy monsters and reach the enemy base to ravage the tower’s hitpoints. Moreover, each monster card has a certain effect and movement speed. For example, a Desert Giant moves slowly, but the damage it takes from other monsters is halved.

Apart from monster effects and skill cards, you will also be able to use hero skills. Basically, in each battle, you can pick a hero along with a corresponding deck you built for him/her. There are currently five heroes in total, each with different skills and specific card types. Unlocking them requires you to defeat them in a duel. That being said, their abilities are extremely unique, and can cater to any play style. For example, the Demon Slayer can use some sort of a teleportation ability, while Mercedes can directly deal damage to monsters.

MapleStory Blitz’s main appeal are its PvP battles which can either be through quick matches or ranked ones. Matchmaking is quick and easy: it takes 10 seconds to find an opponent and half that for matches to load. Unfortunately, the pairings system still need to be tweaked. Some games can be blatant mismatches. For example, a level five account can be matched up with someone who is level 15, resulting in a one-sided massacre. Fortunately, you can take part in less serious matches, like practice games or strut your wares in the Monster Park.

The deck building aspect is pretty intuitive and easy to learn, and it feels much like any other card-collecting game. However, card availability is still an issue, considering that the more gems you have, the more cards you can unlock. The game is also littered with microtransactions, which is something you’re already probably used to. Fortunately, some progression aspects are skill-based: as your heroes increase in level, you will be receiving cards.

Overall, MapleStory Blitz is a fantastic card game, and is a must for anyone who wants to try out a new MMOCCG. It’s highly enjoyable and with fast-paced gameplay elements, it’s guaranteed to keep you playing. Give it a shot and see if you can blitz your way to victory!
