The peace in the world of Tai Yi was shattered as the forces of good and evil went into battle in a struggle to claim the powers of the fabled “Sealed Sword” for their clan. Caught in between, you must decide which side to affiliate yourself with before setting off to build your formidable empire. Recruit heroes to your cause, deploy your armies into the blood-stained battlefields and show the world that you are not someone that they’d want to trifle with!
Overlords of War starts off by giving you 6 characters to choose from and the characters are pretty equal in terms of their gender distribution. These characters do not come with special bonuses, but they will determine which clan you’ll be associated to. So, be sure to choose wisely!
Being an MMO strategy game, empire management is a key aspect in the game. This includes making sure you are producing enough resources to sustain your empire’s as well as your army’s growth. In this game, there are 3 resources that you’ll need to pay more attention to. They include wood, gold and food. Wood and gold are needed for upgrading your buildings, which is something you’ll need to do pretty often, and your troops, while food is mainly needed whenever you send your army out to fight. There are some other ways for you to gain some extra resources, such as completing quests and wining battles with your army.
For the latter option, you will first need to have a strong enough army. To do so, you’ll to recruit heroes. Heroes have their own range of upgradable abilities, which they will automatically use during combat. They can also be equipped with armor, trinkets and weapons to improve their battle power (BP) and levelled up. There’s even a star-system where you can invest more hero souls into a particular hero to increase its star rating.
Each hero is in charge of a battalion of troops and the units they can command vary depending on the type of hero they are. Troops, similar to heroes, can also be upgraded. You can either increase the size of your troops or you could simply improve their enemy-killing efficiency. Regardless of which option – quantity or quality – you chose, it’s very important that you keep your troops upgraded so they have the battle power to take on more powerful enemies.
Ready to unleash your bloodthirsty army onto your enemies? Well, let’s start with the main PvE part of the game – the instances. Each instance allows you to earn up to 3 stars depending on your troops’ performance. If you managed to get all stars for a chapter, you’ll even get a special reward cache containing valuable materials, resources or even hero souls.
Besides instance, you can also take on reward-specific dungeons in Wonderland; battle to push back the Mist in the world map; cooperate with other players to defeat the World Boss; win more hero souls in Trial of Heroes, and more. For players who prefer to PvP, you’ll unlock the 1-on-1 PvP arena at level 22. There are time-based and larger-scaled PvP events such as faction and region battles too.
The combat system in Overlords of War, on the other hand, is pretty unique. Unlike most MMO strategy games you might have played, the strategy aspect comes into play during the planning stage prior to actually going into the battlefield – that is through your troop positioning, as well as during the battle itself.
By utilizing a good strategy, you may be able to flank and even outflank your opponents, allowing you to win battles where your BP is lower than the enemy’s. There are also skills that you can use during combat itself. Although they may not seem like much, these skills may do a critical part in turning the tide of battle, especially when your troops are less well-equipped than your opponents.
Furthermore, in this game, being a part of a faction (a.k.a. guild/clan) will unlock a range of special faction-only features for you. Thus, it’s pretty important to join up as soon as you can. After all, why play alone when you can play with friends?
In short, Overlords of War may have a storyline that seems to have some pretty gaping loopholes, but its gameplay is quite unique. Instead of relying on overwhelming your enemies with sheer number, you can actually use troop positioning and your character’s skills to make a difference prior and during combat. So, if you are looking for a casual MMO strategy game actually places an importance on the strategizing aspect, Overlords of War is a game you will want to try.
